Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine, containing a sulfhydryl group. It exhibits antioxidant, chelating, and detoxifying properties. The sulfhydryl group on cysteine serves as glutathione's active site (hence commonly abbreviated as G-SH), which readily binds to certain pharmaceuticals (e.g., paracetamol), toxins (e.g., free radicals, iodoacetate, mustard gas, and heavy metals such as lead, and arsenic), enabling its detoxification function. Consequently, glutathione (particularly within hepatic cells) participates in biotransformation, converting harmful substances in the body into non-toxic metabolites for excretion. Additionally, glutathione supports normal immune system function and demonstrates skin-whitening and spot-reducing effects.
