Amygdalin is a naturally occurring compound found in many plants, most notably in the seeds (kernels) of apricots, bitter almonds, apples, peaches, cherries, and plums. It is also commonly known as Vitamin B17 or Laetrile.
Amygdalin is classified as a cyanogenic glycoside because each amygdalin molecule contains a nitrile group, which, under the action of β-glucosidase, releases the toxic cyanide anion. Consuming amygdalin can cause it to release cyanide in the body and may cause cyanide poisoning.
