N-Acetyl-L-cysteine is the N-acetylated derivative of cysteine. The sulfhydryl group (-SH) within its molecular structure cleaves the disulfide bonds (-S-S-) connecting mucoprotein peptide chains in viscous sputum, breaking down mucoproteins into smaller peptide chains and thereby reducing the viscosity of the sputum. Additionally, it disrupts DNA fibers in purulent sputum, making it effective in dissolving both white mucus and purulent sputum.
