Chenodeoxycholic Acid (CDCA) is a primary bile acid naturally produced in the liver. It plays a key role in cholesterol metabolism by promoting bile secretion and emulsifying dietary fats. Clinically, CDCA is used to dissolve cholesterol gallstones in patients who cannot undergo surgery, as it reduces cholesterol saturation in bile. It is also employed to remedy certain rare liver diseases, such as cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis. CDCA works by inhibiting cholesterol synthesis and enhancing bile flow. While largely replaced by ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) due to better tolerability, it remains a therapeutic option under specific conditions or in combination therapies. CDCA is currently one of the most widely used pharmaceuticals for remedying gallstones in the world. It is also the raw material for synthesizing UDCA and other steroid compounds.
